Rationale

Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of vision deterioration and blindness in the adult population. For a long period of time, diabetic retinopathy was mostly considered a retinal microvascular disease caused by the direct effect of hyperglycemia and the consequent activation of metabolic pathways.

The pathophysiological paradigm of diabetic retinopathy suggests that in an initial phase of the disease, before damage to the retinal vessels occurs, retinal neurodegeneration (resulting from the imbalance of neurotoxic and neuroprotective factors) involving the retinal ganglion cells and other layers of neuroretin. Several studies have shown that retinal neurodegeneration and microvascular damage are closely interrelated and that therefore neuroprotective therapeutic strategies could be effective not only to prevent or stop retinal neurodegeneration, but also to prevent the development and progression of microvascular abnormalities characteristic of early states. of diabetic retinopathy.

The therapeutic approach of diabetic retinopathy in the more advanced stages involves the use of lasers and intravitreal injections, while in the initial stages of the disease the ophthalmologist uses a “wait-and-see” therapeutic approach. It would therefore be advisable to treat patients already in the initial phase of the disease.

What Omk2^®is

OMK2^® is a sterile ophthalmic solution in a bottle of 10 ml containing 2% of Citicoline, 0.05% of Vitamin B12 and 0.2% of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid.

When to use Omk2^®

OMK2^®, thanks to the presence of Citicoline and to its structural action on retinal ganglion cells, is indicated in patients with incipient diabetic retinopathy. Moreover, OMK2®, thanks to the presence of Vitamin B12, indirectly promotes the physiological processes of corneal re-epithelialization after eye surgery, laser or small abrasions of the corneal surface. Finally, the wetting and protective properties of OMK2 ensures ocular relief in case of irritation, burning and foreign body sensation caused by environmental factors or prolonged use of video terminals.
